At Home with Laura Gerardy
Near Munich, Laura and her husband have fulfilled their dream of living close to nature with their two children – in an extraordinary, light-filled concrete house that feels like an architectural statement.

"At some point, this plot of land practically fell into our hands. There were so many signs pointing to it. Then we decided to build here – to quite literally set it in stone."

The house itself is a total work of art: no right angles, but sharp and sweeping corners, expansive windows, and concrete wherever you look. Monumental features such as the sculptural concrete staircase and the open void above the living room define the character of the home.

The biggest challenge was to make the raw concrete structure feel homely. Laura found the solution in soft materials, furs, curtains, and organically shaped tables that break up the austerity of the architecture. The result is a home that feels both monochrome and minimalist, yet warm and inviting.

There are many favourite spots: Laura’s collection of vintage armchairs is scattered throughout the house, creating little islands to pause and relax.

Another favourite place is the kitchen. Laura loves it when the house is full of life – when the children are playing, friends are visiting, and she can see everything from the open-plan kitchen.

"We didn’t want anything too smooth – we wanted the roughness. We wanted to take the walls just as they were."

"From the very beginning of our house-building project, we freed ourselves from the idea that we had to stay here forever. We said we were open to wherever life might take us, to the opportunities that might come our way, to the changes that may still lie ahead."
